Student Organizations in Modern Languages
The Modern Languages
department encourages its students to seek out opportunities both inside
and outside of the classroom to learn about other cultures and to practice
their language skills. The Modern Languages
Student Advisory Council is a student social organization; the journal
Polyglot
gives students a chance to read and to express themselves in other languages,
and the Phi Sigma Iota society nominates
outstanding Modern Languages majors and minors in junior or senior standing
and graduate students to the international foreign language honor society.
Modern
Languages Student Advisory Council
MLSAC is a group that seeks to spread knowledge about languages and
cultures, both represented by the Department of Modern Languages, as well
as by students.
What does MLSAC do? MLSAC participate in many multicultural activites.
Each semester, we have a language seminar and the Polyglot,
a Department of Modern Languages journal, which is comprised of student
submitted work. We also are involved in other activities, including a multicultural
cookbook, potlucks, and community service.
Who is in MLSAC? Modern Languages majors and minors make up MLSAC,
as well as a faculty representative, Felipe
Gómez. Students taking Modern Languages classes are also welcome
to be involved in MLSAC.
MLSAC is a great way to learn about different cultures and languages. It
is also a good way to teach others about languages and cultures in which
you are interested. You will also meet a great group of people! For more

Phi
Sigma Iota
Each Spring, the Department of Modern Languages recognizes outstanding
academic performance by nominating Modern Languages' majors and minors
in junior or senior standing and graduate students to the international
foreign language honor society, Phi Sigma Iota - Epsilon Epsilon chapter. Photos

Undergraduate Students:
Phi Sigma Iota honors junior and senior undergraduate students of foreign
languages who:
- have at least a B average in their entire college work and all foreign-language
courses
- have completed at least one course at the third-year level
Graduate Students:
Phi Sigma Iota honors graduate students of foreign languages who:
- have completed at least one semester of graduate work
- have at least a B-plus average in all courses taken
- have attained a high degree of competence in at least one foreign
language

Polyglot
Polyglot is the undergraduate journal for the Department of Modern
Languages at Carnegie Mellon. It appears each semester. Students of all
languages, including English as a Second Language, are invited to contribute
essays, poems and critical works. Normal length is approximately two pages.
To submit a piece to Polyglot, send both an electronic and a paper copy
of your document to Sue-mei
Wu.
Paper copies of the current issue of Polyglot are typically available
in the Modern Languages offices (Baker Hall 160), and electronic copies
are available here:
