Personal
Statement
As a teaching professor in Chinese, I enjoy teaching and introducing Chinese
language, culture and society to my students. My goal is to maximize not
just their learning, but also their interest in and enjoyment of Chinese
language and culture. This goal has intertwined well with my research
interests, which focus on linguistics, pedagogy, computer-assisted language
learning, and folk performance.
Recently I have been occupied with developing course websites, online
materials and exercises for several courses, including first-year Chinese,
a course for heritage students, and oral communication courses. (Examples
may be seen HERE).
In addition, I have recently conducted fieldwork on societal change in
modern China and will use it to create online modules to enhance language
and culture acquisition for advanced-level students. I am also cooperating
with several other professors from different universities on Classical
Chinese textbooks. These textbooks will be used in a new Classical Chinese
course I will offer Fall semester 2002. Another interest of mine is Chinese
folk performance, which I believe to be deeply involved with daily life
in Chinese societies. I have been researching Taiwanese puppet theater
and Taiwanese Opera, investigating ways in which they reflect aspects
of local culture, language and society. Finally, I have been working on
the challenge of meeting the needs of students from a broad range of backgrounds.
To this end, I am working on materials tailored to the special needs of
heritage students..
