Personal
Statement
The emphasis of my work in French and international studies is
an attempt to characterize societal change, especially in its cross-cultural
dimension, through its reflected impact in the various discourses and
artifacts available to us for study. My dissertation concerned the cultural
interchange between France and America in the mid-Twentieth century as
represented in the work of Boris Vian, especially his jazz criticism and
mock translations of American hard-boiled novels. My continuing interest
in this area is the evolution of the French national identity and myth-structure.
Recently I have begun working on the cultural and history of Quebec, especially
the role of popular song as both a creator and reflector of québécois
identity.
In my capacity of director of the Resource Center I am interested in
the intersection of technology and the teaching of language and culture.
This is reflected in an emphasis on multimedia development, specifically
the use of the computer to process sound, text, imagery, and moving image
in an integrated environment, whether for Internet or CD-ROM delivery.
Currently I am directing the continuation of the Language Online project
as part of both the Open Learning Initiative and the Pittsburgh Science
of Learning Center, which will result in new courses in French and Chinese
capable of hosting research projects, tracking and modeling student users,
and being open to multiple modes of utilization.
