Guidelines for Publishing Web Pages in ML Web Server

If you have NEVER done this before, here are the steps you need to follow ( Experienced user may skip the first 7 instructions. ) :

Get on a Mac on the Campus Network:

  1. Go to Chooser in Apple Menu.
  2. Click on AppleShare.
  3. Go to Zone "BH" (baker hall) - A List of computers will show up.
  4. Click on "ML 2" and OK box.
  5. Enter your username and password ( If you do not remember, e-mail mlrc@ml2.hss.cmu.edu)
  6. Click on "WebSTAR Server Suite 4.4" and OK box.
  7. Double-Click the "WebSTAR Server Suite 4.4" folder that now appears on your desktop
  8. By this time you should see a list of folders. You'd be able to access the following ones:

Creating a webpage for your course :

  1. If you want to create a webpage(s) for your course, double click on the "courses" folder and create a new folder for your course under courses window after you get into the folder. There is an naming convention for this folder you're going to create. For example, if you're the only person teaching 82-123 , that'd be the name you're going to put for this folder. However, if there are 2 or more people teaching the same course, put your name in parethesis right after the course number without space in between; for example 82-123(Me) would be an appropriate name for the course folder.
  2. Now you have your course folder. Double click to enter it. This folder would be referred as "root" in further instructions.
  3. Create a webpage named "index.html" by using your HTML editor*. This file will be the main page for your course website. The address for your course page would be something like - "http://ml.hss.cmu.edu/courses/82-123(Me)"
  4. If you need to create folders under your own course folder, name folders according to the nature of the subject, and make them easy to remember.
  5. After you're all done, send an e-mail message to the admins at mlrc@ml2.hss.cmu.edu, and we will put a link to your page in the MLRC course center index.
  6. If you need to any assistance about setting up the webpage or need some special setup, send an e-mail to mlrc@ml2.hss.cmu.edu.

Creating your own personal webpage:

  1. If you want to create a personal web page(s), double click on the "FacPages" folder and create a new folder for yourself under FacPages window after you get into the folder. There is an naming convention for your folder. Use a unique name to represent yourself. (This may have been for you already,)
  2. Now you have your personal site folder. Double click to enter it. This folder would be referred as "root" in all further instructions and assistances.
  3. Create a webpage named "index.html" by using your HTML editor*. This file will be the main page for your personal website. The address for your course page would be something like - "http://ml.hss.cmu.edu/FacPages/your_name)"
  4. If you need to create folders under your own course folder, name folders according to the nature of the subject, and make them easy to remember.
  5. After you're all done, send an e-mail message to the admin at mlrc@ml2.hss.cmu.edu, and we will put a link to your page in the ML faculty directory webpage.
  6. If you need to any assistance in setting up the webpage or need some special setup, send an e-mail to mlrc@ml2.hss.cmu.edu.

HTML Editor recommendations (ranked by functionality)

  1. Adobe Golive 5.0- Professional strength - available in the MLRC, speak to Cesar regarding its use
  2. Macromedia Dreamweaver 5.0 - available at the Computer Store
  3. Microsoft Word 2001 - available in the MLRC and at the Computer Store

Important Note:

It's important that you do not use web editors that utilize non-standard html tags (for example: Claris Homepage). The reason for this is that it is very time consuming for the administrator to see what HTML documents have errors in them and there are usually thousands of documents that the admin has to go through as regular server maintenance. To save both admin's time and yours, please be considerate as to the amount of information on our web server, since it grows exponentially over semesters ( The amount is more than doubled every year. )
